Soccer, but with guns, grappling hooks, jetpacks and no referee. That’s the pitch behind Illegal Soccer, a game made by studio Repotted on Roblox that has taken off since its September launch, racking up nearly 150 million matches.

How Illegal Soccer works

The vibe is anything goes: fast, easy-to-join multiplayer matches made for playing with friends. The game takes a familiar sport and mixes in combat and over-the-top movement, creating a different kind of competitive social game on the platform. According to Roblox, the community reception has been extremely positive.

Illegal Soccer is also part of Roblox’s Novel Games initiative, which highlights unexpected genre mashups.

Weekly updates

The game gets new content every Saturday. The latest update added more than 50 achievements, covering:

• Career milestones: goals, assists, saves, tackles and item hits;
• MVP titles, levels and daily streaks;
• Ranked progression all the way to the Hall of Fame;
• In-match feats.

Each achievement awards a Roblox badge and in-game rewards, and players can track their progress and stats in the lobby. Illegal Soccer is free to play on Roblox.
