Project Scorpio supports FreeSync and HDMI 2.1

Project Scorpio, the future Xbox One X, will support FreeSync and HDMI 2.1, Microsoft announced right after the specification was finalized.

Although the HDMI 2.1 specification
was only recently finalized, Microsoft announced that Project Scorpio will support AMD’s FreeSync 2 format and also the variable refresh rate specification that HDMI 2.1 brings.

This feature lets the console dictate to the display which frame rate it should hold, instead of how it is today, where the display has a fixed refresh rate and the console must adapt to an integer divisor of that rate, otherwise there is tearing or stuttering. While on a traditional monitor anything that isn’t exactly 30 or 60fps feels like it is hitching, this feature lets any frame rate above 30 and below 60 show the same consistency in frame delivery, offering smoother animation.

Currently no TV supports the HDMI 2.1 specifications, but Scorpio will be compatible with FreeSync monitors right away, which could be an option for those who don’t want to wait for the next batch of TVs.
