343 Industries talks about Halo 5: Guardians

343 Industries speaks to GamesTM about Halo 5: Guardians, its development and what the studio learned from the series on Xbox One.

343 Industries gave some statements to GamesTM. Despite having helped with the development of Halo Wars 2, the studio’s last big game was Halo 5: Guardians.

Considering that Halo 5 has the best multiplayer in the franchise, but several fans complained that the game’s campaign was not as glamorous as usual for the series.

In Halo 5 the Spartans split into two teams: Fireteam Osiris, led by Spartan Locke, and Blue Team, led by Master Chief. However, you control Locke more than the Chief, which left players somewhat sulky, as they expected to play and learn more about the saga’s main character.

Frank O’Connor, the franchise director, understands the fans’ criticism and acknowledges they made a mistake by not focusing on the character:

“It wasn’t so surprising to me, but the fans’ call for more Master Chief after Halo 5 was significant, and so I think he will be more important than ever to our franchise. Instead of concentrating on bringing new characters into the world and expanding the playable characters, we shifted the focus a bit to make the world a little more realistic and engaging and, I would say, more fun for the players who demanded the Chief in the future.

“Focusing on the Master Chief story was probably the easiest lesson from Halo 5. That was a very simple thing to absorb and embrace for the future of the franchise.”

“People have become attached to him over the last fifteen years, with a genuine emotional connection. We certainly underestimated that in Halo 5. The effect the character has on his surroundings and on the ‘fate of the galaxy’ has had a resonant effect on fans over the years.”

Halo 6 has not had anything revealed yet and certainly is not coming this year, but 343 Industries is expected to reveal the game’s first teaser at this year’s E3.
