Anyone who grew up reading about Final Fantasy in the magazines of the time knows the series has always liked to give room to supporting characters. In June 2017, Square Enix showed the first details of another Final Fantasy XV DLC, and now it was the group’s cook’s turn to get his own adventure: Episode Ignis.

The episode was announced for December of that year and promised a more detailed narrative about Ignis Scientia, the strategist and cook who accompanies Prince Noctis. From what was shown, Ignis appears to have been captured by the villain Ardyn and his minions. Episode Ignis was part of the game’s Season Pass, but could also be bought separately.

For context: Final Fantasy XV came out on November 29, 2016, and the character episodes had been coming out one by one. Episode Gladiolus arrived in March 2017, and Episode Prompto in June. During the same announcement season, Microsoft confirmed at its E3 2017 conference that Final Fantasy XV would receive a free update for the Xbox One X, with 4K image.

What came next

Episode Ignis came out on December 13, 2017. The story takes place during the assault on Altissia, with Ignis fighting to protect Noctis. A gift for longtime fans: Yasunori Mitsuda, the composer of Chrono Trigger, a name any 1990s rental-store regular recognizes fondly, composed three pieces of the soundtrack.
