The Mummy got a video game adaptation this year. Of its most recent movie, starring Tom Cruise, released this year.
WayForward, one of today’s best studios when it comes to pixel-art games and Metroidvanias – like the Shantae series – made a version in exactly that style based on the movie. The game, however, doesn’t follow the events of the movie, but delivers its own narrative, in which the player controls several Prodigium soldiers.
If you are an old-school gamer, from the SNES days, you will surely love this mix of Contra 3 and Super Metroid. A difficult, challenging and very addictive game, not to mention the great soundtrack.
Story
The Mummy Demastered arrives to bring a nostalgic tone to the current generation, in a game that mixes several elements of 2D platformers, with puzzles and shooting in every direction, on non-linear maps, with many enemies on screen. In this game, a powerful ancient evil has risen from the catacombs, and the war to save humanity has begun! As an elite agent of the monster-hunting organization Prodigium, you will use a variety of weapons, upgrades and magical artifacts to defend humanity from Princess Ahmanet’s supernatural hordes.
Your Prodigium colleagues are ready, but headquarters lost contact with them hours ago; the only way to understand what happened to your companions is by exploring tombs, forests, abandoned tunnels and the cursed streets of London.
Ahmanet is the boss behind it all; the girl controls legions of zombies, insects, worms, plagues and worse, and when you die she controls your corpse. Something very interesting: you fight yourself, at your last place of death with the weapons you had when you died!
GamePlay
The game has a single map, which you explore to find weapons, collectibles, HP upgrades and complete the objectives given to you. The commands are easy to learn: jump, shoot, switch weapon and roll. Just that, which makes it easy and challenging. The character is agile and very light, so you can’t blame your character for mistakes. It strongly recalls the movements of our beloved Samus from Super Metroid.
The game has a large and varied range of enemies and bosses.
And we can’t forget the incredible, remixed 16-bit soundtrack, which gives the game a really cool atmosphere to play in.
Conclusion
Don’t judge this game by the movie; with The Mummy Demastered, WayForward may have achieved its best work. It deserves to stand alone as one of the best recent examples of not only ethical pixel art, but an excellent combination of weapon execution, platforming and exploration. The game affords itself the luxury of paying homage to multiple 16-bit ancestors. The Mummy Demastered is a polished, accomplished and rewarding adventure. Everyone will lose hours of gameplay.
