Review of Frutakia 2 on PS4: a casual match-three puzzle game from Crazysoft Limited built like a slot machine, fun in short bursts only.

Frutakia 2 is a casual “3 match” puzzle game made by Crazysoft Limited, known for developing games for the mobile market.

As with most of the developer’s games, the gameplay of Frutakia 2 is very simple: line up 3 or more items in a row, in any direction, to score. The twist here is that the play area is a slot machine, like the ones in casinos, which even earned a notice on the game’s page that it is not an online casino. This changes how you play, since the 5 slots with the items can only be moved up or down, greatly limiting the possible plays. To compensate, you can use the lever to reshuffle the slots. Making enough matches fills a bar and raises your level, adding another item to the slot machine and offering bonuses when matched.

From the description it sounds fun, and it really is, but the few pieces and the limited moves make you run out of possible matches very easily. This forces constant use of the reshuffle lever, leaving your chances in the match to luck. Speaking of luck, at every game over the game gives the option to spin a roulette to try to win an extra life or more points at the end. It is welcome, given how often you see the game over screen, but it is still frustrating to depend more on luck than on your own skill to stay in the game.

Visually the game doesn’t stand out much. Since it is a mobile port, the visuals and effects are very basic but charming and do their job well, although I find the use of emojis questionable, as they clash quite a lot with the rest of the package. The audio, on the other hand, didn’t get the care it deserved. The menu screen music is very pleasant, but during the game the music that plays is very quiet and gloomy (?), a strange choice for a game like this. The effects also suffer from this inconsistent volume, with some much louder than others.

Overall Frutakia 2 is entertaining, but only for short periods of time. The developer itself describes it as ideal for playing in lines or on public transport, and it has little appeal on the PS4, which has more varied options available. Unless you want to emulate the feeling of waiting in line at the bank on your console, I recommend the mobile version.
