Nothing cuter than a wizard kitten

You who clicked on this review and don’t know the franchise must be wondering: “Best of what? Is it a music compilation?” Well, answering the question, it’s almost that. In September 2017 Dreamz Studio released the game Magicats Builder, which is nothing more than a level builder (like Super Mario Maker). After some time the developer put together a compilation with the 100 best works from its community and released this special edition. The coolest part is seeing that they cared about sharing the profit with the folks who invested a little time in the original game.

What’s this game about?

Crazy Dreamz: Best of is a fun 2D platformer that, unlike what we’re used to and given the proposal it offers, doesn’t have a rich adventure story. Being a collaborative game, each level is self-contained, with no narrative linking one point to the next. On one hand that’s good, because you approach it like a little mobile game where you turn it on, play a bit and leave. On the other hand, it’s a PC game, and this lack of a “heroes’ grand goal” may discourage the more conservative.

Graphically it’s cute, but I get the impression the developer didn’t bother to refine each level for the compilation’s release. While playing you can notice that, due to limitations of the original game’s building tool, many scenery objects could have been replaced with something more coherent in this “best of”. I like the sound side, with a calm soundtrack that matches the colors and look of the game.

The gameplay is simple. Jump, cast magic and climb (yes, you climb very well, not least because we’re playing as a kitten). What can get in the way a bit is a game system in which gravity inverts and you end up switching position in the scenery, but nothing that good old “trial and error” doesn’t solve.

As for what we’ll find in each level: it depends. In all of them your goal is to reach the little house, but for that you will need to cross the level in the traditional platformer way (crossing it to the end) or else solve a puzzle that most of the time is something quite simple, but still fun.

Is it worth buying?

The game is a lot of fun and offers a different proposal. For the experience and the time you’ll need to invest to finish the 100 levels, I think the price being charged today (R$ 20,69) is fair, but if you can wait for a discount sale, I think that’s more appropriate, since it’s nothing spectacular or innovative.
