Sony’s resistance to cross-platform games affected the online functionality of Fortnite on Switch
Today (06/12) Fortnite was announced and immediately launched on the Switch eShop . Many were eagerly waiting for confirmation of the rumors (and leaks) and rushed to download the game to have the battle royale experience anytime, anywhere.
Unfortunately, many players (and this writer is included) were greeted with a strange message when they tried to connect the device to their game accounts, the Epic Accounts.
This Fortnite account is already associated with a platform that does not allow it to be operated on a Switch. This situation cannot be worked around by the Fortnite website or by Epic Consumer Support. To play Fortnite on your Switch, please create a new account.
Basically, Fortnite players who at some point logged into their account using a PS4 are barred (by Sony) from connecting using other consoles. This situation goes a step beyond simply not cooperating with cross-platform online play: it is a monopoly, a direct disrespect of consumer freedom… And fans of the game are furious about it.
Understandable, since dedicated players would like to have access to everything they have already earned after investing dozens/hundreds of hours in the game… And it gets even worse for those who spent money on the game to get more content.
It is sad to open the game and not be greeted with your ID, your level, your friends, your achievements, your emotes and your gear.
For now, all we can do is express our discontent and hope that Sony opens up or that Epic takes more aggressive measures.
