The long-awaited sequel to Unravel has finally arrived! Keeping its lovely visuals and puzzle-filled gameplay, it is everything fans wanted, and with the addition of a new character, everything gets better; but the narrative remains a bit weak, just like its predecessor.
STORY
Unravel Two tells the story of two teenagers who are running away from their abusive parents, and just as in the first, this story is told in the form of small flashes in the level, something that doesn’t leave you interested in digging deeper into the plot. Guided by a kind of fairy, the yarn dolls sometimes step in and help the teenagers, something they never notice. There are creatures made of pure malice that can eliminate the yarn dolls just by touching them.
The story takes place in the background and, unlike the first game, the characters in the story move. They are made of a kind of soul. In the foreground, we see the big world from Yarny’s perspective.
GAMEPLAY
One of the great improvements in Unravel Two, unlike the first, is that the dolls move faster, making escape puzzles possible. The addition of the new Yarny, for two-character puzzles, turned out fantastic; each puzzle that uses both was very well thought out, from the simplest to the most elaborate. All the gameplay is very fluid, and the controls are more precise and quick.
Unlike the first, the game is a bit harder, with less repetitive puzzles. Now, with the new doll, you go through the whole game with both. They are connected by a thread and can’t get too far from one another, and with just a tap of a button you switch between them, or if you prefer, just touch the two together and hold the switch button; they will merge into a single doll, so you can get through some challenges alone.
An interesting feature is using one Yarny as support while the other is swung by the rope so it can reach higher places, making the two players work as a team to reach the goal.
A new character customization option has also been added; you can modify the colors, head, eyes and body of your doll. There are few options, but they are there.
The biggest novelty of this game is the addition of co-op, both online and local. You can play with your friend, and the challenges remain just as hard or funny.
GRAPHICS
What was good remains, with improvements. The photorealistic look of the scenery and its great soundtrack make you feel inside the game with every move of your Yarny. Incredible scenery and very well-done sound design make the game even lovelier and leave you wanting more. There’s not much for me to say here; whoever played the first one already knows the game’s strong point is the graphics.
For anyone who has the chance to enjoy this game in 4K, don’t let it pass.
CONCLUSION
Unravel Two pulls off a lively and satisfying cooperative experience, preserving most of the original’s charm. An excellent sequel to the first with better challenges, it was everything fans of the first wanted, and I’m sure they won’t be disappointed.
