This Is the Police 2 review

Review of This Is the Police 2 on PC: a dense mix of strategy, management and tactical turns about running a police station in a cold, corrupt small town.

Reviewed on: PC

Forget Police Academy and The Naked Gun: the talk here is serious and dense, in the best Quentin Tarantino or Coen Brothers style. In This is the Police 2 you are a fugitive sheriff (from This is the Police) who ends up working as an assistant to a rookie Sheriff in a small town.

You are the town’s sheriff, and of course, it looks nothing like those romanticized “I am the law” or “To serve and protect” movies. The game takes you far from that right-or-wrong, good-guy-or-bad-guy talk. The game slaps you in the face right at the start, with a note saying that police officers are also flawed, imperfect human beings.

Running a police department is like running any business: you have to know how to move the pieces carefully and understand the environment; there are officers who skip work because of alcoholism, cases of sexism and prejudice among the staff, some officers use these reasons to avoid working with the proper partners, so you need flexibility and a good memory so as not to leave the city unprotected; in short, your job is to organize this cauldron of discord, and often choosing the right partners for operations is the best way to save the day.

Your team is a challenge, but the craziness the city provides is bigger; with many calls I imagined would be quiet, in the end there was brawling, gunfire and bombs. And in others where I sent a team prepared for chaos, one experienced negotiator was enough and tempers calmed down.

Besides running the city, your protagonist is a fugitive ex-cop working among cops; do you think that would make a great story? It did.
The whole narrative is told through comic-book scenes with a minimalist feel, but with really cool dialogue and sound effects, not lagging behind any Vertigo comic.

GAMEPLAY

The great differentiator from the first game is that now big missions requiring tactical operations must be played in a tactics turns model, a scheme that gave the game a really cool feel, so we don’t just read text and options. The tactics turn model fit the theme very well.

However, the battles are complex and of reasonable to high difficulty, stressing out those unaccustomed to the genre. The camera in tactics mode also leaves a bit to be desired, bothering and hindering some parts, a factor that can frustrate a little, but won’t make you abandon the title.

SOUND

The game’s soundtrack is good, calm when necessary, immersive when necessary, well balanced and doesn’t steal focus from the game’s core, which is reasoning. The effects of gunfire, movement and interaction with the scenery are well polished and functional.

VERDICT

The story is F*&@: you can’t put the game down until you finish it, even with its negative factors; if you enjoy a good police story and management with strategy, the game is a guaranteed buy.

Developer Weappy was right to continue its This is the Police franchise, and took a risk by expanding the gameplay to tactics turns, a risky bet, not a critical hit, but it came very close; we want the third title, because if the company keeps on this improvement curve the next one will be a masterpiece.
