NES emulator on the Switch hacked

Hackers broke into the Nintendo Switch Online NES emulator less than a day after launch and can already swap in other games, kapu told Polygon.

It has not even been a day since the Nintendo Switch Online service launched, but hackers have already managed to get into the service’s NES emulator.

In fact, hackers have already figured out how to replace the NES games and add new ones. According to kapu, who discovered this information, the service’s NES emulator is nothing more than an “existing emulator with some ROMs.” The emulator kapu refers to is the NES Classic Edition, which was hacked a while ago.

Kapu told Polygon that “for someone with no prior experience running Switch mods, getting everything set up at first is a process, but nothing too difficult with proper instructions. After an initial setup, it’s pretty easy to replace ROMs and add other new ones.”

As for why the emulator appears to be so easy to hack, kapu says “I have serious doubts that it points to a vulnerability, I would say it is just a side effect of making it easy to add more games officially and release more over time, thus making it easy for modders too.”
