After being accused of keeping racist content in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Nintendo promised changes. The reason for the criticism is that one of Mr. Game & Watch’s moves references Fire Attack, a 1982 game in which the goal was to defend a wooden fort from Native Americans who wielded lit torches and had feathers in their hair.
In a statement to Eurogamer, Nintendo said: “Nintendo plans to release an update for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that removes the feather from Mr. Game & Watch’s silhouette. The original game this depiction of the character is based on was released more than three decades ago and does not represent the values of our company today.”
“We sincerely apologize that this was not noticed in our marketing material, and we are continuing our work to make Super Smash Bros. Ultimate an experience that is both welcoming and fun for everyone.”
