Introduction
“Fluffy Horde is a 2D side-scroller that mixes RTS and Tower Defense (and a little bit of naughtiness). The game revolves around a horde of rabbits that breed nonstop, created by a rascal wandering Shaman.” – Steam
The Steam description matches perfectly the irreverent tone we will find when playing. Fluffy Horde is a 2D game that mixes the styles of RTS, Tower Defense and Puzzles.
The game has a very acidic humor that is shown right from the campaign’s first mission, which shows a very crazy Shaman creating a horde of rabbits that multiply at absurd speed, leaving the player with the task of organizing knights and other resources to protect windmills and buildings, escort princesses to parties and even protect a cow.
Gameplay
The game begins by introducing the player to the basic concepts, showing how to create, move and upgrade soldiers, cross bridges, protect windmills and escort NPCs. Unfortunately it falls short in not showing some important details more clearly, such as the bar at the bottom of the screen that is used to move quickly around the scenery, or telling you that to move the soldiers you need to move the flag that represents them. It is also worth noting that the levels’ objectives are not clear, causing the player, at times, to lose the mission for not understanding what the proposed objective is.
Another thing that caught my attention, negatively, was the difficulty level, which has a variation that is hard to understand, since you spend a good part of the time playing levels with a simple and accessible learning curve and out of nowhere you are thrown into a level with a very high difficulty level. It would be interesting if the developers raised the difficulty progressively and not so radically. The game also has a quite limited tactical level; after all, you almost always have the same units, so the possible strategies are few.
Movement in the game is basically all done using only the mouse (it is basically with it that you will perform all other actions), and the levels vary between protecting windmills while we exterminate the killer rabbits, escorting and protecting a princess until she reaches a party and escorting a cow to a plant shaped like teats (but what!?!). Each of these tasks requires you to manage crafting resources, according to the level’s objective, and keep an eye on the positioning of your units.
Graphics and Sound
The game’s graphics are beautiful and the 16-bit pixel art style needs no comment. The movement is fluid and the colors are vibrant and well chosen, that is, the game fills the eyes of those who enjoy that retro 16-bit style. The sounds are good, but after a while they become tiresome from the lack of variation.
Conclusion
Fluffy Horde is an irreverent, beautiful and fun game that deserves to be played (even more for the inviting price of R$8.50) even though it falls short in some aspects. Just don’t expect a troop-management game similar to traditional RTSs, since the focus here is completely different. The objective is to analyze the map and fulfill the goal with the tools it provides.
