State of Decay 3 confirmed and will have an AAA budget

Microsoft Studios head Matt Booty says State of Decay 3 will get an AAA budget now that Undead Labs is a first-party studio, acquired in 2018.

State of Decay 3 Confirmed!

Undead Labs was one of the companies acquired by Microsoft in 2018 and, it seems, thanks to that we will get a supercharged State of Decay 3 with an AAA budget. The head of Microsoft’s studios, Matt Booty, said:

“They made the first State of Decay, which was good but had some problems… in the animation, for example. We kept working with them, and then came State of Decay 2, which for me ended up on the edge of what we consider to be an AAA game. It was a near miss. I think that if we made a State of Decay 3 in the same model we were working in – with the studio producing the game under contract – they simply wouldn’t get there.

(The criterion for acquisition) is less about financial situation and more about being on the verge of becoming a studio that makes top-tier games.

What we want to do is: bring Undead Labs into our ecosystem, free them from all the bureaucracy of contracts and negotiations, where everything is done with counted money, and tell them: ‘make State of Decay 3 with AAA quality’. We want the game to be up there at the top, alongside Left 4 Dead and other top-tier games. The best way to achieve that is to make them a first-party studio and help with everything they need.”
