The fight for the hearts of PC gamers is heating up. On one side is the traditional Steam, which until recently faced only timid competition from Origin (EA Games), Uplay (Ubisoft), Battle.net (Activision-Blizzard), GOG and the Microsoft Store; on the other is the new Epic Games store (from the makers of Gears of War and Fortnite), which offers developers up to 88% of revenue from their game sales as its draw.
The newest competitor in this market will be Discord, which announced that in 2019 it will open its store, letting developers publish their games and keep 90% of the revenue from sales. For those who don’t know it, Discord is a very popular chat app for video games with a very large number of active users; according to the company, more than 200 million people have used the app.
Though promising, Discord will face a market titan, Steam, which currently has more than 100 million users, with about 10 million people online at any given time, a huge and well-established audience for anyone who wants to sell.
