Epic Games takes a jab at Steam, says it will only stop making exclusivity deals when Steam raises developers’ share

Epic Games' Tim Sweeney says it will only stop making Epic Games Store exclusivity deals when Steam raises the developers' revenue share.

Tim Sweeney, president of Epic Games, took another jab at Steam on his Twitter. He said:

“If Steam committed to a permanent 88% revenue share for all developers and publishers without major strings attached, Epic would hastily organize an exclusives retreat (honoring the commitments of our partners) and consider putting our own games on Steam.”

It is not new that Epic Games representatives criticize Steam for its policy of “taking” 30% of the revenue generated by the sale of a game on its platform (on Steam, games that sell less than $10 million receive 70% of the revenue generated, games that reach a value above that, between $10 million and $50 million, receive 75% of the revenue, and games that sell above $50 million receive 80% of the revenue).

In response to this policy, Epic Games (famous for creating the Gears of War series and more recently the Battle Royale Fortnite) has made several exclusivity deals so that games that previously would have come out on STEAM migrate to its platform, which, unlike STEAM, offers developers and publishers 88% of the profits from game sales, but unfortunately lacks simple features that have existed on Steam for years, such as cloud saves, user reviews, account sharing and so on. Sweeney also commented on his ideal vision of a digital game store, “without conditions”, that is, “they can use whatever online systems, such as friends and accounts, they want, they are free to operate across platforms and stores” and that “the store does not charge revenue on other stores or platforms. Basically, the spirit of an open platform where the store is just a place to find games and buy things.”

And what do you think of the statement by the president of Epic Games?
