Not all game news is about art and gameplay; sometimes the subject is the bill. At the end of May 2019, Sony confirmed it would adjust the price of PlayStation Plus, the subscription that unlocks online multiplayer on PlayStation consoles, in several markets at once. Brazil was on the list, along with countries in Europe and Asia, including Japan.
The first signs came from players themselves, who received emails from Sony warning about the changes. In Europe, the new prices would take effect on August 1, 2019, and the size of the increase varied from country to country: in some, only the monthly plan went up; in others, such as Switzerland, all plans got more expensive. In Portugal, for example, only the one-month subscription would change. Here in Brazil, the increase was also confirmed.
Contacted by the press, Sony justified the increase with the “conditions of the various markets” and did not give other reasons. What stands out is the tone of the statement, which tried to highlight what the subscriber would keep receiving:
“This change will allow us to continue to provide an excellent service at an attractive price. Subscribers will be able to continue to enjoy all the benefits and features of PlayStation Plus, such as online multiplayer, monthly games, 100GB of cloud storage space and exclusive discounts on the PlayStation Store.”
“The affected regions will be Europe, Brazil and Asia (including Japan). Portugal will have an adjustment only on the one-month subscription.”
What came next
PlayStation Plus has changed a lot since then. In March 2022, Sony confirmed a new three-tier model, launched between May and June of that year: the old plan became PlayStation Plus Essential, with online multiplayer, monthly games and cloud storage; Extra added a catalog of more than 400 PS4 and PS5 games; and Premium, called Deluxe in some regions, incorporated classic games, game trials and, in some countries, cloud streaming, absorbing the old PlayStation Now. All three tiers continue to offer monthly, quarterly and annual payment options.
