Nintendo says Nintendo Switch Lite will not replace the Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo says the Switch Lite, a smaller handheld-only version of the hybrid console, will not replace the Nintendo 3DS, which remains on sale.

Nintendo announced a new model of its hybrid console, the Nintendo Switch Lite; the new console is a smaller version focused on portability, being a handheld-only console (it can’t be connected to the dock to play on the TV and has no detachable Joy-Cons).

As soon as I saw the announcement I imagined Nintendo’s strategy would be to hook Nintendo 3DS fans by encouraging migration to the Switch, which would let Nintendo focus on a single platform serving its whole audience, making that platform stronger. Well, it seems Nintendo didn’t think that way, because it announced that the new device did not come to replace the Nintendo 3DS; Nintendo’s own president said “We will continue to support the 3DS family of systems as long as there is demand”.

I personally would have preferred that it started winding down support for the platform, encouraging migration to the Switch… and you?
