Microsoft has adopted a more open strategy than its rivals, allowing some of its games to come out on other platforms such as the Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PC (Steam). Games like Minecraft, Cuphead and recently Ori and the Blind Forest showed up on the competition and raised some questions about the company’s policy (it is worth noting that many of these titles either were not truly exclusive or had come out on another platform before the studio became part of Microsoft).
Many wondered whether the company intended to extend this policy to Xbox’s main franchises (Halo, Gears and Forza); it seems the questions have finally been answered, because in a statement to GamesIndustry, Microsoft said it has no plans to bring more games to other platforms. A company spokesperson said:
“Last year was an exciting time for us as we more than doubled the internal creative teams that make up Xbox Game Studios. As these new studios moved over, we were aware of some existing commitments to other platforms and we would honor them. Going forward, however, these new studios will focus on creating games for our platforms. We have no plans to further expand our first-party exclusive games to other consoles. We continue to believe deeply in crossplay and in progression of games with the right flexibility for developers to ensure a fair and fun experience”.
