Sony opens cross-play feature to all developers

Sony opens PS4 cross-play to all developers, allowing matches between players on different platforms. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will use it.

Cross-play is a very interesting and beneficial feature for the gaming community in general. Imagine the scenario: you and your friend own the same game, but out of personal preference play on different platforms, for example PS4 and Xbox One. Normally you couldn’t play together unless you had the same platform.

That started to change this generation because Nintendo and Microsoft showed interest in cross-play, and as a result games like Fortnite, Rocket League, Paladins and Minecraft began to let players on different platforms play together. Sony at the time didn’t much like the idea and justified not allowing cross-play by saying it wanted to protect children, although it didn’t specify what it wanted to protect them from…

After a lot of pressure from the media, players and even developers, the company decided to release the feature in beta, but only for selected titles such as Fortnite. Now the story finally seems to have changed, as Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan said in an interview that the feature is out of beta and is now available to all developers who want to implement it. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the most recent title that will use the functionality. Did you like the release of the feature?
