Phil Spencer says he has not decided the future of Zenimax games because the purchase is not yet complete

Phil Spencer told GameReactor the Zenimax purchase is not closed and awaits regulatory approval, expected early 2021, so he cannot plan its games’ future.

Phil Spencer (head of the Xbox division), in an interview with GameReactor, revealed that the Zenimax purchase has not yet been completed. According to him, Microsoft announced its intention to buy Zenimax (the company that owns Bethesda Softworks, id Software, Arkane Studios, Tango Gameworks, MachineGames and ZeniMax Online Studios), but the purchase is subject to regulatory approval. That is why he can’t yet plan the future together with the company because, according to him, “it would be illegal”. Phil said:

“First of all, I’d like to say that we have not acquired ZeniMax. We announced our intent to acquire ZeniMax. The purchase is going through regulatory approval and we don’t see any problem there. We expect the deal to close in early 2021. But I say this because I want people to know that I’m not going to sit down with Todd Howard and Robert Altman and plan their future. Because right now I can’t do that, it would be illegal. Your question comes completely at the outset, but I get a lot of questions now: ‘is this game exclusive? Is this game exclusive?’ And now, that is not my job with regard to ZeniMax. My job is not to sit down and go through their portfolio and dictate what happens.”

Basically he said that until the purchase is completed, they don’t own the company yet and therefore have no power to decide the future of its games. He also makes clear that everything is going well with the regulatory process and that in 2021 (it seems) the deal will be concluded.
