In an article titled “Why the PS5 is outperforming the world’s most powerful console“ Tom Warren, senior editor at the well-known news site The Verge, explains the alleged reason why the PS5 is outperforming the Xbox Series X in comparisons such as those made by Digital Foundry.
According to Warren, several sources he spoke to report that Microsoft sent the (final) development kits much later than Sony, leaving developers little time to adapt their titles to Microsoft’s platforms… Sony, on the other hand, sent development kits much earlier, giving developers more time to adapt their titles to the PS5. It is worth noting that the Xbox Series X, on paper, has better technical specs than the PS5 in practically every respect, which is why there was a lot of surprise at seeing several tests in which the PS5 does better than it.
Warren contacted Microsoft to try to get some official confirmation and received the following statement:
“We are aware of performance issues in a handful of optimized titles on Xbox Series X/S and are actively working with our partners to identify and resolve the issues to ensure an optimal experience. As we begin a new generation of consoles, our partners are only now scratching the surface of what next-gen consoles can do, and minor bug fixes are expected as they learn to get the most out of our new platform. We look forward to continuing to work with developers to further explore the capabilities of Xbox Series X/S in the future.”
Although nothing has been officially confirmed by Microsoft, what Warren said makes a lot of sense. After all, the Xbox Series X is in fact more powerful (unless Microsoft lied about its specs… but I doubt that is the case, since it could have its image tarnished in the market and still be sued and lose millions of dollars), and on top of that there is the fact that until recently almost no footage of games running on the Xbox Series X had been shown, while footage of games running on the PS5 popped up by the dozen… everything indicates that Microsoft really took a long time to finalize the console’s final development kit. Well, this soap opera still has a long way to go!
