BioWare used to be a company whose name was associated with RPGs of enviable quality: Mass Effect, KOTOR, Baldur’s Gate, Dragon Age… there was a time when the company’s games were literally a unique experience. Time passed and the company (sadly) declined a lot… Anthem and Mass Effect: Andromeda were projects that clearly fell short of what the company’s fans expected.
Even after that, fans still hoped for a turnaround; after all, hope dies last, doesn’t it? Well, in this case hope has just gone into a coma… the company has just lost two heavyweight names from its ranks: Casey Hudson and Mark Darrah have left the company. Hudson was one of the creators (and also the director) of the Mass Effect franchise, while Darrah had more than 20 years at the company and worked actively on Dragon Age, being one of the franchise’s main creative leaders.
Yes, BioWare has been going through dark times… fortunately there are still veterans working at the company; for example, Matthew Goldman (who has also worked on Dragon Age since its creation) will take Mark Darrah’s place, which means that at least whoever took over his position is someone with experience in the franchise and not just anybody. All we can do is hope the company gets its projects right again!
