The Survivalists review

Review of The Survivalists, Team17's survival game with roguelike elements in the vein of Don't Starve and Terraria, with monkey helpers.

Reviewed on: PC

The Survivalists is Team17’s newest venture into the survival genre with roguelike elements, like Don’t Starve and Terraria.

The game starts with your character, with a few customization options, waking up on an island, where little by little you are introduced to the game’s mechanics. Up to there it is very similar to other games in the genre, until you reach the special part of the game, which is giving commands to your monkey friends, from gathering resources to defending your character, which is excellent for those who can’t play with up to 4 friends, and makes the experience quite fun.

During your journey, besides protecting yourself from predators and the weather, you will have to worry about things like where your character rests; a bed can guarantee better energy recovery than lying on the ground, just a few examples. Walking across the islands (yes, islands) you will find everything from a volcanic environment of extreme heat to swampy ones, where flies will be one of your concerns. As you advance, the game increases the items that can be crafted, such as a raft for navigating the map, as well as character customization and the training of the monkey helpers.

With pixel art graphics, the game knows how to use visual effects well, the controls respond well to what is on screen and even with 4 players there are no frame drops. The intelligence of both the enemies and your monkey helpers is good and does not cause freezes during the story. The game features very specific parts with logic challenges, but anyone observant who knows how to use their simian allies will solve them quickly.

The game takes around 35 hours to finish and about 45 hours for those who want to do everything. The game was released on October 9, 2020 for PCs and consoles

The Survivalists does not reinvent the wheel of roguelike survival games, but it efficiently uses all the conventions of the genre.
