PlayStation 5 may have sold 3.4 million units at launch

PlayStation 5 may have sold 3.4 million units at launch despite the pandemic and recession, per Digitimes. Sony has not released official figures.

Something very curious happened in this new generation: even with the pandemic and the economic recession in several countries, the new consoles sold out their stock within hours. Today you can’t find an Xbox Series X ready for delivery anywhere, while the PS5 had a more generous supply: Sony managed to produce more consoles than its rival (even though neither is managing to meet demand), but the console still sold out everywhere. Today it is possible to buy it on pre-order from the big retailers, but delivery is only promised for February.

Digitimes reported that the PS5 hit 3.4 million units sold in the first 4 weeks after launch, which is a record in the PlayStation family, making it the fastest-selling console in its first month. By the end of 2021, Sony expects to have put between 16 and 18 million units of its console on the market.

It is worth noting that Sony has not released official numbers, so it is not possible to say for sure whether this figure is real or just an estimate by Digitimes.
