Japanese analyst says PlayStation is in decline in Japan after the PS5 launch

Analyst Hideki Yasuda says Sony is not taking Japan seriously, as the PlayStation 5 declines in a market where the brand once had strong local support.

A headline like this is scary, isn’t it? After all, one of Sony’s big differentiators is the massive support of Japanese developers. That support gave PlayStation many memorable titles such as Persona, Siren, Street Fighter, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and others. So we have to wonder: why on earth would Sony set aside such a valuable partnership? Well, according to Japanese analyst Hideki Yasuda, “Sony is not taking Japan seriously.”

It’s true that the PS5 is no longer the huge hit in Japan that its predecessors were and, according to Yasuda, this has led the company to look at the Japanese market differently, with the larger investment going to the West. Sony shipped few PS5 units to the Japanese market, prioritizing the Western market.

On top of that, we recently saw an exodus of big creative minds from Japan Studio, who left the company to found their own studios (rumors say Sony has been making internal changes that have displeased its developers). Sony’s official position is that these claims are untrue.
