Gears of War is not just a classic of the Xbox platform; the game is also considered a technical showcase of what Xbox consoles are capable of. Recently, the studio currently in charge of the series, The Coalition, said it was moving to the new version of Unreal Engine (until then the developers used Unreal Engine 4) and that it would take a while to show anything new related to the next Gears.
Fortunately, we will get a conceptual demonstration of what to expect from the Gears developers, because The Coalition, in partnership with Epic Games (the company behind Unreal Engine), will give a presentation called Alpha Point showing the engine’s new visual systems, running on the Xbox Series X.
“The Coalition will debut the UE5 tech demo “Alpha Point” on Xbox Series X, created to evaluate UE5 internally. The talk will cover the lessons the team learned creating Nanite-resolution assets and incorporating them into a real-time lighting scene with Lumen and Virtual Shadow Maps. Performance and memory observations will be covered for Xbox Series X and S, as well as VFX, Blueprint, material setup, Temporal Super Resolution and virtual texture results. The Coalition will also cover some preliminary findings on creating next-generation characters and integrating MetaHumans, showing a next-generation character test running on Xbox Series X.”
The demo will take place on July 20 at GDC.
