Recap: Pokémon Presents – August 3, 2022

Recap of the August 3, 2022 Pokémon Presents: Nintendo and Game Freak’s announcements about the future of the Pokémon franchise.

Nintendo and Game Freak streamed Pokémon Presents with news about the franchise.

During the companies’ live event, several announcements were made about the future of their physical, digital and mobile titles.

To start, the return of the franchise’s TCG (Trading Card Game) championships was presented, after almost three years of hiatus. There was also a brief mention of anniversary events for Pokémon Unite (1 year), Pokémon Masters EX (3 years) and updates for Pokémon Café Mix. There were also some mentions of future updates and events involving Pokémon GO, plus a summary of the latest features released.

Of course, the highlight of the online presentation was the news about Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

The adventures in the Paldea region were confirmed to be in the open world RPG format. Character movement is flexible with the help of Koraidon or Miraidon, legendary Pokémon that change shape to let the player travel quickly, swim and even glide, so that exploring the region is complete.

The player will be a student at one of the region’s two academic institutions, Naranja and Uva, and will take part in a special event, the Treasure Hunt. From this point, three main story paths will be available. First, the conquest of the gyms and competing to become champion of the region’s league, with the novelty that these gyms can be challenged in any order! There is still no information on the other available campaigns.

Several characters who will appear in the titles were also introduced, with their designs and roles revealed. Some of the new Pokémon were also shown, along with confirmation of the traditional regional forms for some already known creatures.

The title also promises a fuller multiplayer experience, in which, with up to 3 other players, it is possible to explore the whole Paldea region, but let us wait for more details before getting on this hype train.

Succeeding Sword and Shield’s Gigantamax, in the Paldea region every Pokémon has the possibility of Terastallizing, in which the Pokémon’s body is covered in a gleaming crystallization and a specific accessory becomes part of its anatomy.

Terastallization can intensify a Pokémon’s type and even change it. It is worth noting that the phenomenon is not entirely fixed: the type of transformation for the same species can vary depending on the specific Pokémon, for example: an Eevee would keep its Normal type even when transformed, but it is possible to find and catch Eevee that actually Terastallize into Water or Grass types.

Raids are back in the new title, with improvements and new features. Cooperation is still fully essential to victory, but it is possible to make battle choices at your own pace, without having to wait for the other players’ actions to progress in combat.

The titles, exclusive to Nintendo Switch, will be released on November 18, 2022 and pre-orders are already available on the Nintendo eShop.

More details about the new titles can be found on their official site.
