DICE and EA announced that Battlefield 1 would be free for all Xbox Live Gold subscribers on Xbox One over the weekend of March 3 to 5, 2017, as part of Xbox Live Gold Free Play Days.

Event times:

Start: Friday, March 3, at 2 PM (Brasília time; 9 AM Pacific time)
End: Sunday, March 5, at 11:59 PM Pacific time, which in Brazil was already the early hours of Monday the 6th

What stands out is that it was not a chopped-up demo: the trial gave access to the full game, with multiplayer and War Stories, the campaign split into short chapters with different soldiers. Achievements and Gamerscore earned over the weekend were saved, and progress carried over for those who decided to buy the game later. During the same period, EA ran a sale of its games on the Xbox store, with a discount on Battlefield 1 and other titles from the publisher.

On PC, EA offered a similar path through Origin: an open trial with 10 hours of play, four multiplayer modes on five maps and the first two War Stories.

For those who had never tried it, it was a good entry point. Released on October 21, 2016 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, Battlefield 1 took the series to World War I, with matches of up to 64 players and a very clever design detail: the Behemoths, such as airships, armored trains and battleships, which enter the field to help the team that is losing by a lot. You can see the care in turning disadvantage into spectacle, instead of letting the match die.

What came next

The trial came on the eve of the first paid expansion, They Shall Not Pass, focused on the French army and released in March 2017. Then came In the Name of the Tsar (September 2017), Turning Tides (December 2017) and Apocalypse (February 2018). Battlefield 1 passed 15 million copies sold worldwide and was very well received by critics, who praised the World War I setting.

Indies and pixel art

Capitão Pixel swears he has a pilot’s license, but the only thing he really flies is the Steam Next Fest demo list. He covers indies, pixel art and art direction, and can write three paragraphs about a jump animation. He has never been seen without his captain’s cap, not even in photos (which, let’s be honest, are all drawn).
