What catches the eye in YAR is Slavic folklore brought into an open world. YAR: Forgotten Throne, an open-world RPG inspired by Slavic folklore, launched on October 14 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Independent studio Honor Games’ RPG has already done well on PC: when it left Steam Early Access in April, it hit second place on SteamDB’s hot releases chart, and it holds a “Very Positive” rating, with about 9 in 10 players recommending it.

Gothic and The Witcher with a Slavic accent

Comparisons to Gothic and The Witcher come up in almost every conversation about the game. It’s set in the lands of Borea, where poisoned forests hide the central mystery. You pick one of three classes: Warrior, Archer or Volkhv, a sorcerer-priest of old Slavic belief. Classic folklore figures appear along the way, including Koschei the Deathless, Zmey Gorynych and Baba Yaga.

  • 100+ quests, two factions and three large settlements
  • Crafting through alchemy, cooking, blacksmithing, enchanting, fishing and jewelry-making
  • Difficulty ranging from a story-focused mode to a hardcore mode that limits saving
  • Full voice acting in English and Russian

From Early Access to consoles

A lovely detail of its journey: YAR entered Steam Early Access in 2024 and left it with version 1.0 on April 3, 2026. The console version brings the same package as the PC release, and that is where Honor Games’ project shows real ambition for an independent studio.

The game leans on classic RPG progression: character attributes, active and passive skills, secrets and references scattered across the map, and varied biomes, from forests swallowed by darkness to its three large settlements. If you like exploring at your own pace, there is plenty to find.

On-screen text is available in Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish and several other languages, which makes the story and quests easy to follow.

Indies and pixel art

Capitão Pixel swears he has a pilot’s license, but the only thing he really flies is the Steam Next Fest demo list. He covers indies, pixel art and art direction, and can write three paragraphs about a jump animation. He has never been seen without his captain’s cap, not even in photos (which, let’s be honest, are all drawn).
