Some characters win you over with their story and some with their looks. Shin Hisako, announced for Killer Instinct in March 2017, has both. She is an alternate version of Hisako, the vengeful spirit who was already part of the roster, and arrived as one more addition to the Xbox One and Windows 10 fighting game.

In the story, Shin Hisako is the body of Hisako that broke her ties with her own grave to walk among the living again and protect the world from the attacks of the Shadow Lords. She wields a sacred katana that belonged to one of this world’s ancient guardians, and what stands out in the design is the contrast: Hisako’s frightening figure now takes on the air of a protective warrior, with a nobler and less somber look.

The context helps explain her arrival. Killer Instinct’s third season began on March 29, 2016, with Iron Galaxy Studios already in charge of development and with the Windows 10 version. The season brought heavyweight guests from other Microsoft series, such as Rash from Battletoads, the Arbiter from Halo and General RAAM from Gears of War, plus original fighters like Kim Wu, Tusk, Mira and Gargos. The soundtrack was by Atlas Plug and Celldweller. After the season ended, the game still received Eagle, Kilgore and, finally, Shin Hisako.

What came next

The Definitive Edition, from September 2016, already bundled the third season’s content. In 2023, on the game’s ten-year anniversary, Microsoft announced an update with native 4K resolution on Xbox Series X|S, and the Anniversary Edition came out on November 28, 2023. A final update, in April 2024, added ranked matches with crossplay between platforms. A nice touch for a game that many had given up as finished.

Indies and pixel art

Capitão Pixel swears he has a pilot’s license, but the only thing he really flies is the Steam Next Fest demo list. He covers indies, pixel art and art direction, and can write three paragraphs about a jump animation. He has never been seen without his captain’s cap, not even in photos (which, let’s be honest, are all drawn).
