Facts first: Electronic Arts posted on Twitter an image with the official Star Wars Battlefront II logo, confirming the sequel to the 2015 game. The message also carried the date of the first showing:
“Star Wars Battlefront 2 is coming this year. See it for the first time April 15 at 2:30PM ET/11:30AM PT.”
Translating the time zones: April 15, a Saturday, at 3:30 PM Brasília time. Without saying whether it would be a teaser, trailer or gameplay, EA made clear only that the launch would be at the end of the year, close to the debut of Star Wars: The Last Jedi in theaters, in December. More details were expected at EA Play and E3 2017, in June.
The game’s existence was not exactly a secret: EA had already mentioned the sequel in May 2016. Development was split among three studios: DICE, responsible for multiplayer, Motive Studios, with the single-player campaign, and Criterion Games, with the ship battles. In practice, that means the main criticism of the first game, the lack of a campaign, was in the crosshairs.
What came next
The reveal took place during Star Wars Celebration, on April 15, and the game came out on November 17, 2017 for PS4, Xbox One and PC. The campaign follows Iden Versio, commander of the Empire’s Inferno Squad, between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. The launch, however, was marked by loot boxes tied to progression: an EA reply on Reddit became the most downvoted comment in the site’s history, with more than 667,000 downvotes. Microtransactions were turned off on November 16, the eve of launch, and progression was reworked on March 21, 2018.
The numbers: 68 on Metacritic on PS4, 66 on Xbox One and 65 on PC. Support continued until the last content update, on April 29, 2020, with the Celebration Edition released in December 2019. In 2025, the game filled servers again with its arrival on Xbox Game Pass and the final season of Andor. Redemption, in the saga’s style.
