PS6 may be close to US$1,000 per unit just to manufacture.
Well-known AMD hardware leaker KeplerL2 said on the NeoGAF forum that the RAM chips and the NAND chips for the SSD alone currently cost more than US$680.
In March this year, KeplerL2 estimated the total cost of producing one PS6 unit at around US$760.
If Sony decided to subsidize the console and absorb part of that production cost, it could sell for US$700 at launch.
Then in July, KeplerL2 posted that his estimate for the cost of the PS6 components had risen to US$960.
And this week, he said the RAM and NAND chips alone now cost US$680.
The shortage of these components, driven by high demand from AI companies, has pushed prices up worldwide, since manufacturers simply can’t expand their factories beyond current capacity.
Sony’s leadership has said that, although it has nothing to share about the PS6 yet, it is inclined to stop selling its hardware at a subsidy, that is, below production cost. So we are probably looking at the first numbered PlayStation to sell for more than US$1,000 at launch in its base version.
Remember that all of this should be treated as a rumor, even though the source is reliable and has leaked information before that turned out to be true.
Sony has not officially announced the PlayStation 6 or its specs.
