Some studios we follow by résumé, and MercurySteam has a good calling card: it is the Spanish team behind Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. In May 2017, the studio confirmed that Raiders of the Broken Planet, its new project, would come to Xbox One.

The game is a third-person action adventure with shooting and melee combat, and what stands out is the format: asymmetric multiplayer, in which one group of players completes the mission while another can join the enemy side to get in the way, and a campaign told in episodes. Producer Dave Cox even said that abandoned ideas from Lords of Shadow 2 influenced the project. The setting is also out of the ordinary, with a distinctive science fiction look.

On Twitter, the studio promised 4K support on Project Scorpio, the console that would become the Xbox One X, and crossplay between Xbox One and PC.

What came next

Raiders of the Broken Planet came out on September 22, 2017 for Windows, PS4 and Xbox One.

In July 2018, MercurySteam renamed the game Spacelords and made it free, unlocking the four campaigns, with 16 missions in total, in any order. In November 2020, it got PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions.

Capitão Pixel swears he has a pilot’s license, but the only thing he really flies is the Steam Next Fest demo list. He covers indies, pixel art and art direction, and can write three paragraphs about a jump animation. He has never been seen without his captain’s cap, not even in photos (which, let’s be honest, are all drawn).
