Shantae, gaming’s most beloved half-genie, got new content on July 31, 2018, in a free update WayForward called the “Summer Surprise.” There were two additions.
The first is Jammies Mode. Yes, the pajamas Shantae starts the game in: now you can play the whole adventure in them, hitting enemies in a pillow fight, floating on a dream cloud and firing sleepy little sheep that deal huge damage.
The second is an extra transformation dance themed after Blaster Master Zero, Inti Creates’ game: with it, Shantae turns into the Sophia III tank. It is yet another of those crossovers between 2D action game studios that fans love.
The update came out for free on all versions: Switch, Wii U, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox One and Steam, in both the base game and the Ultimate Edition. Shantae keeps surprising new fans and Kickstarter backers. If it keeps this up, it will be as well regarded as our friend Shovel Knight for its free content additions.
Below, the trailer for the new content. You can find our review of the beautiful Switch version, the Half-Genie Hero Ultimate Edition, here.

A bit of history: Half-Genie Hero was born from a 2013 Kickstarter campaign that asked for 400 thousand dollars and passed 900 thousand in total. The game came out on December 20, 2016 for PS4, PS Vita, Wii U, PC and Xbox One, reached the Switch on June 8, 2017 and received three paid expansions: Pirate Queen’s Quest, Friends to the End and the Costume Pack, which closed the list in April 2018. The physical Ultimate Edition for Switch, with all this content, came out on April 3, 2018.
What came next
Half-Genie Hero went on to get versions for Amazon Luna in 2020 and for Stadia and PlayStation 5 in 2021, and it holds Metacritic scores between 76 and 82, depending on the platform.
