Facts first: at the September 13, 2018 Nintendo Direct, Bandai Namco announced Katamari Damacy Reroll, a remastered version of the classic and eccentric Katamari Damacy. The date came right after: December 7, 2018, for Nintendo Switch and PC, via Steam.

A correction to the first version of this news: the November 30 date on the eShop, with a physical edition only on December 7, was not confirmed. The Western release was indeed set for December 7, on both platforms.

The original came out for PlayStation 2 in 2004 and became a cult favorite for its premise: the King of All Cosmos, in a drunken stupor, destroys the stars in the sky, and the Prince must recreate them by rolling a sticky ball, the katamari, that picks up everything it finds in front of it. First paper clips and coins, then cats, cars, buildings and, in the end, entire islands. Translating the jargon: it is a physics game about growing in scale, and the fun is in feeling the world get small.

On the technical side, Reroll brought graphics and cutscenes rebuilt in high definition. On the Switch, the game took advantage of the console’s features: you could control the katamari with the Joy-Con gyroscope, which also vibrate with HD Rumble, and shake the controller to do the Prince Dash, the Prince’s sprint. Local multiplayer worked with one Joy-Con per player.

What came next

Reroll arrived on Switch and PC on December 7, 2018, as promised. Almost two years later, it got PS4 and Xbox One versions in November 2020. The sequel got a remaster too: We Love Katamari Reroll + Royal Reverie, in 2023.
