Some products sell on nostalgia, and some sell because they were made with care: Nintendo’s minis managed both. In the financial report released on October 31, 2018, the company said that the NES Classic Edition and the Super NES Classic Edition, combined, had already passed 10 million units sold worldwide as of September 30.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa commented on the result: “Combined global sales of the NES Classic Edition and Super NES Classic Edition have surpassed 10 million units. The Super NES Classic Edition, launched last fall, and the NES Classic Edition, re-released in June this year, continue to sell as must-have products, and the fact that they are so affordable suggests there will be even greater demand during the holiday season.”
Two minis, two stories
The NES Classic came out in November 2016 with 30 games in its memory, sold out everywhere and had production ended in April 2017, to the surprise of many. It returned to stores on June 29, 2018. As of June 30 that year, Nintendo counted 3.6 million units of it sold.
The Super NES Classic arrived on September 29, 2017 in North America and Europe, with 21 games. A nice detail: among them was Star Fox 2, canceled in 1996 when nearly finished and officially released for the first time right there, unlocked after completing the first stage of the original Star Fox. You can see the care in small things, such as the rewind feature, praised by critics at the time, and the controllers with longer cables than those of the NES Classic. The mini passed 2 million units in late October 2017 and 5 million on March 31, 2018.
What came next
Furukawa’s remark about the end of the year was also a farewell. In December 2018, Nintendo said neither of the two would be restocked after the holidays and that it did not plan other mini consoles anytime soon. Production ended there, and the company’s classic games came to live in the Nintendo Switch Online catalog.
