Some collaborations are worth it for the name, and some are worth it for the care put into the costumes: PUBG’s partnership with the 2016 movie Suicide Squad tried to be both. On November 6, 2018, PUBG Corp. announced two limited-time item sets inspired by Harley Quinn and the Joker, the DC villains.
What stands out is how closely the look follows the movie. Harley Quinn comes with a white and red baseball jersey, fishnet stockings, denim shorts and the pink and blue pigtails, with the “Puddin” necklace. A nice detail: her baseball bat became a weapon skin, turning the player’s melee weapon into the character’s bat. The Joker brings a short jacket, a shirt tucked into his pants, green hair and the face tattoos, including the “Damaged” on his forehead.
The items could be bought separately, such as hair, makeup and outfit, or together, with a discount for those who got each character’s full pack. The sale ran from November 6, 2018 until the end of January 2019, and the collaboration was announced for PC, Xbox One and the mobile versions.
You can see the care in fitting such over-the-top characters into a more realistic-looking game like PUBG. The pieces are ordinary cosmetics, changing nothing in gameplay, and the artists’ challenge was making the duo recognizable from afar without them completely clashing in the middle of a battlefield full of jackets and military helmets.
What came next
Cosmetics like these became even more central to PUBG from January 12, 2022, when the game went free-to-play on all platforms under the name PUBG: Battlegrounds, with an optional paid upgrade, Battlegrounds Plus, for modes such as ranked matches.
