Ever imagined a Kingdom Hearts without Disney? And with every Final Fantasy character your mind can conceive, but ridiculously Super Deformed?
That is the bet that World of Final Fantasy makes: a KH with a much less confusing story, and practically all the cool FF characters. Only all in Super Deformed form. The in-game justification is that the realm’s inhabitants have this form. The normal-sized characters have a special appearance in the story, but I, personally, couldn’t figure out exactly who the game’s target audience is.
A large part of the appeal also lies in the game’s Pokémon vibe: most of the enemies you face can be captured. The way of using these monsters in battle is curious, to say the least: you can stack your character and two more monsters. The protagonists can freely switch between the Super Deformed form and normal humans. Each of these has a size category, and sits in a fixed spot in the stack. The stats and abilities of each character in the stack also combine, even creating new abilities together with the protagonists’ abilities.
Musically, there is nothing to say about World of Final Fantasy. Masashi Hamauzo manages to deliver an engaging setting, although the game’s graphics are constantly reminding you that, well, it’s a game. Once again, it’s hard to define what Square Enix’s goal was here. Introducing the classic heroes to new generations would be easier if you didn’t have the clear intention of creating an entire game just to make Funkos out of them. The charisma of the twin protagonists is, basically: a focused and intelligent sister, and a completely imbecilic brother. REALLY IMBECILIC. It gets tiring in the first minutes of the plot.
Is it worth buying?
If you are an FF addict in a terminal state, it still isn’t worth it. I believe it’s very hard for someone fond of the series to get attached to the iconic characters in Funko form. If you are someone who has never been through the series, go play the FF XII Remaster. It’s a great introduction to the series, and this Zodiac Age version has stuff that was only in the Japanese version.
Technically the game is okay, which is the only thing stopping me from giving a score lower than 5.
