Some teasers give everything away and some only set the mood: the one Ubisoft published on December 5, 2018 was the second kind. Showing no name or gameplay, the video indicated that the next Far Cry would be set in a post-apocalyptic world. At the time, many people, including us here at SavePoint, treated the project as Far Cry 6. It wasn’t.
What stands out is the narration, which speaks of an end no one expected: “None of us were ready for the end, the flames devoured everything. And when death rolled through our valley, our world turned cold and dark. The years of rain, the howling winds, the blue sky gave way to a new world. We felt hope. We were wrong.”
Trailer:
The next day, December 6, the mystery ended at The Game Awards 2018: the game was Far Cry New Dawn, a direct sequel to Far Cry 5. Hours before the ceremony, the cover had already leaked online. The story is set 17 years after the nuclear ending of Far Cry 5, in the same fictional Hope County, Montana, now overtaken by colorful vegetation and mutant animals. A nice detail: instead of the usual gray post-apocalypse, the art direction bet on strong, almost neon colors.
The villains are the twins Mickey and Lou, leaders of the Highwaymen, a band of raiders that attacks survivor communities. Development was handled by Ubisoft Montreal, with support from the company’s studios in Kyiv, Bucharest and Shanghai.
What came next
Far Cry New Dawn came out on February 15, 2019 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, and reached Stadia in November 2020. Critics were divided, with averages between 71 and 75 on Metacritic: praise for the gameplay, reservations about the story and the similarity to Far Cry 5. The real Far Cry 6 was only announced in 2020 and released in October 2021, on the fictional island of Yara.
