This story is a curious one: on January 2, 2019, Ian Bell, CEO of Slightly Mad Studios, announced on Twitter that the Project CARS studio was planning its own console, the Mad Box. A few days later, he shared a concept image of the device, and the look caught attention right away, because it strongly resembled the style of Razer products, with aggressive lines and a gaming PC feel.
The promises were huge for an independent studio. Bell said the Mad Box would be “the most powerful console ever built”, capable of running games in 4K at up to 120 frames per second and of supporting the main virtual reality headsets at 60 frames per eye. The launch forecast was 2022. To attract developers, the idea was to offer Slightly Mad’s own graphics engine for free, without requiring exclusive games. Bell himself warned that the image was only a concept and that the design could still change a lot.
What came next
As far as is known, the Mad Box never reached the market. In November 2019, Codemasters bought Slightly Mad Studios for about 30 million dollars, taking the Project CARS rights along. In February 2021, Electronic Arts bought Codemasters, and the studio became part of EA. In November 2022, EA discontinued the Project CARS series after the track and car licenses expired. What remains is the image of the console, a cute dream that is now just an archive curiosity.
