AMD revealed its new graphics card generation at CES 2019. The Radeon VII will be built on a 7 nanometer process and promises 25% higher performance than the last generation (of the Radeon line), with which the company hopes to reach consistent performance hitting the 4K/60FPS target even in the most demanding games. The announcement and the promise of reaching performance comparable to the RTX 2080 did not please Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who commented:
[The Radeon VII] is underwhelming. The performance is lousy and there’s nothing new. [It doesn’t] have Ray Tracing, it doesn’t have AI. It’s 7nm with HBM memory that barely keeps up with a 2080. And if we turn on DLSS, we kill it. And if we turn on Ray Tracing, we kill it […] “It’s a weird launch, maybe they thought of it this morning.”
Nvidia’s CEO claims the competitor’s new graphics card is not truly strong or comparable to the RTX 2080, since it lacks a technology capable of running real-time Ray Tracing and has no specialized cores for AI, but it is worth remembering that there are still no tests proving or disproving the mentioned inferiority in games. The only certain thing is that Nvidia seems to have been bothered by the comparison with the RTX 2080.
