A while ago, rumors surfaced that Respawn, the creator of the Titanfall franchise, was working on a direct sequel to the game. To the surprise of many, Respawn recently denied the rumor and stated that the game they were working on was Apex Legends, a battle royale that was released yesterday, February 5, and is available on PC, Xbox One and PS4.
The game takes place in the Titanfall universe, 30 years after Titanfall 2, in an area called the Outlands, where characters compete against each other in a survival game in the style of “the Hunger Games”. The goal of the game is to lead your team, which has 3 members, to victory by surviving the clash against 19 other teams (57 players in total).
In an interview with Eurogamer, Respawn said it intends to implement cross-play (which would allow people on different platforms, for example PS4 and Xbox One, to play together), but for now it has no date for this feature. For those curious about the interview, the main excerpts are below (full interview at the link further down):
“When we started [Apex Legends] we were building Titanfall 2, and we didn’t know we weren’t going to have double jump or wall-running or Titans. The choice not to have them came out of testing against our goals: to have a strategic, mastered and deep game.
we were looking for ways to tell more stories within Titanfall – the fight between the IMC and the Militia is quite binary, quite black and white – and what’s really exciting is thinking more about a gray area: what does the wild west of the Titanfall universe look like?
“With these sometimes unpleasant characters, what are they like? Caustic is a great example – he’s like a Saturday morning cartoon villain, he’s not a very evil guy, but he’s deliciously evil – and you get more of these kinds of characters. So, for us, it’s really about finding more ways to add depth to this world. ”
