This contest was a lively one: in January 2019, two huge releases arrived almost together, Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 remake, on January 25, and Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts III, at the end of the month. When Sony released the list of the most downloaded games on the European PlayStation Store for the month, first place went to the Raccoon City horror game.
Resident Evil 2 debuted at the top and took the crown from FIFA 19, which also saw GTA V move ahead and dropped to third place. Kingdom Hearts III entered at sixth, and the two were the only new entries on the list, which had many re-entries of games released at the end of 2018. Here is the full top 20:
- Resident Evil 2 (new)
- Grand Theft Auto V
- FIFA 19
- Need for Speed Payback (re-entry)
- PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds
- Kingdom Hearts III (new)
- The Sims 4: Deluxe Party Edition (re-entry)
- The Forest
- Rocket League
- Battlefield V
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
- Assassin’s Creed Origins (re-entry)
- Rainbow Six Siege (re-entry)
- Minecraft
- Star Wars Battlefront II (re-entry)
- Gang Beasts
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- Marvel’s Spider-Man
- Battlefield 1
- Gran Turismo Sport
A nice detail of this list is the mix: it has horror, soccer, racing, battle royale, survival in the forest and even the jelly-like mess of Gang Beasts, all sharing space with Marvel’s Spider-Man and Red Dead Redemption 2.
What came next
The remake became a phenomenon. Capcom reported 3 million copies shipped in the first week and 4 million in the first month; it reached 5.8 million in December 2019 and 10 million in July 2022. In September 2026, it passed 20 million and became the best-selling Resident Evil in history. Critics loved it too: scores between 89 and 93 on Metacritic and the Ultimate Game of the Year award at the Golden Joystick Awards. The free DLC The Ghost Survivors arrived on February 15, 2019, and the PS5 and Xbox Series versions came out on June 13, 2022. My little gamer heart, which is terrified of zombies, applauds from afar.
