Shawn Layden, head of Sony’s 13 game development studios, was emphatic that Sony will keep focusing on single-player experiences, in an interview with GameInformer. Shawn said:
“I think we have to have both. That’s not a cop-out answer. I think we set a high bar by being the best at long-form narrative games,”
“We have some of the best storytellers in the industry working on Worldwide Studios projects, whether it’s Sucker Punch or the team at Bend working on Days Gone and of course Naughty Dog and Santa Monica Studio. I think it’s a super strength of ours. I was glad to see that three of the five game of the year nominees were Worldwide Studios games.”
“I was glad to see Detroit get some love because it’s a very complex game, at least in terms of development, and the team at Quantic put their heart and soul into it. They are the only team in the world that can create that kind of branching narrative design. Seeing the team recognized was very good for us.”
“As for games as a service and eSports or recurring revenue, whatever it is – if we can do something interesting and meaningful, we will do it. If we are going to partner with another team to, once again, deliver something interesting and meaningful, we will be there and do it,”
About the multiplayer experience he said “it’s not a lack of interest in those areas, it’s just an area in which, historically, we haven’t done well.”
