For fans of gaming’s most stylish witch, the February 13, 2019 Nintendo Direct left a taste of wanting more. Nintendo confirmed that Bayonetta 3 was still in development at PlatinumGames, but gave no release estimate, which had been “to be determined” since the announcement at The Game Awards in December 2017. In the same Direct, another Platinum game, Astral Chain, was announced with a date already: August 30, 2019.
It was on the Nintendo Power Podcast that a light appeared. Bill Trinen, Nintendo’s senior product marketing manager, talked about the partnership with Platinum after commenting on Astral Chain:
“I think this is what makes the partnership between Nintendo and Platinum Games so fantastic. To me, I look at them and see the kind of intense action games that historically did not appear much on Nintendo platforms.”
“With this collaboration with Platinum Games, being able to present things like this and of course, they mentioned Bayonetta 3, which is still in development. It really helps improve the overall catalog available on the Nintendo Switch.”
“Of course that is another game that may arrive sooner than people expect. It will arrive at the end of this year.”
The excerpt appears at around the 24-minute mark of the podcast, which you can watch in full below:
What came next
The forecast did not come true. Platinum released Astral Chain, which was made in parallel, and Bayonetta 3 only arrived on October 28, 2022. Direction went to Yusuke Miyata, with the series’ creator, Hideki Kamiya, as supervising director. A nice detail: the newcomer Viola, a witch in training from a parallel universe, who activates Witch Time with a parry system and fights with her fists when she summons the demon Cheshire. The game received generally favorable reviews and sold 1.07 million units by March 2023. The change of the protagonist’s voice, from Hellena Taylor to Jennifer Hale, after a payment dispute, also got people talking.
