Yesterday at GDC 2019, Google introduced to the world its game streaming platform (actually it is a service, since there is no physical hardware), Stadia. It is no secret to anyone that Microsoft has been working on something similar long before Google; Microsoft’s game streaming solution is called Project xCloud and promises to be broader than Google’s proposal. Let me explain: Microsoft will bet on game streaming without abandoning the traditional model, meaning users will choose whether they want to keep playing the traditional way, with a physical console and downloading their games to play offline whenever they like, or whether they want to ride the streaming wave, which does not require dedicated hardware but makes the user totally dependent on connection quality.
About Google’s presentation, Phil Spencer (the top boss of the Xbox division) commented:
“We just saw Google’s announcement of Stadia as a team here at GDC. Your announcement is validation of the path we embarked on two years ago.
Today we saw a major technology competitor enter the games market and structure the ingredients needed for success such as Content, Community and Cloud. There were no big surprises in their announcement, although I was impressed by the leverage of YouTube, the use of Google Assistant and the new WiFi controller.
But I want to come back to us, there was good work to get us to the position where we are ready to compete for 2 billion gamers around the planet. Google got big today and we have a few months until E3, when we will grow a lot.
We have to stay agile and keep building with our customer at the center. We have the content, the community, the cloud team and the strategy, and, as I have been saying for some time, it all comes down to execution. That is even more true today.”
