PlayStation 5 architect partially reveals the console’s official specs

PlayStation architect Mark Cerny reveals part of the PS5 specs, including an ultrafast SSD and full backward compatibility with the PS4.

Mark Cerny, the lead architect of the PlayStation 4 project, today revealed some specifications of Sony’s next console, the PlayStation 5. Cerny confirmed that the next console will be fully backward compatible with the PS4 (it was not mentioned whether there would be backward compatibility with systems prior to the PS4) and will have an SSD (which is much faster than a hard drive) as its storage system.

It was also mentioned that the new console will feature an 8-core AMD processor based on the new ZEN 2 architecture and an AMD graphics card based on the new architecture codenamed NAVI, with Ray-Tracing support. He also highlighted that the console will have a custom unit for 3D audio, saying:

“As a gamer, it has been a bit frustrating that audio has not changed much from the PlayStation 3 to the PlayStation 4. With the new console, the dream is to show how dramatically different the audio experience can be when we apply a significant amount of power to it.”

From what was said, the PS5 has everything to deliver a much bigger hardware leap than its predecessor did. The ZEN 2 line of CPUs uses a refined architecture and, according to AMD itself, one of the chip models (probably the “Ryzen 3700X”) already manages to beat an Intel Core i9 9900K, the best current home processor on the market, while consuming 30% less.

We do not yet know whether the PS5’s CPU will be as strong as the one shown at an AMD event, but just knowing that the technology can deliver this level of performance and energy efficiency, we can expect, even if the chosen chip is inferior to it, much better performance than the weak Jaguar processors in the PS4 and Xbox One. So, are you excited for the PS4’s successor?
