The trailer for the Sonic movie was just released and has already been surrounded by controversy: the character’s look clashed with the design of the original character. Fans complained a lot and some even created alternative looks, closer to the original Sonic. After noticing the negative reception to the trailer, Jeff Fowler, the film’s director, said he had listened to the criticism and that Sonic would receive a “revision” of his look.
Yuji Naka, co-creator of Sonic, also gave his opinion on the matter and even said he believes he is partly to blame for Sonic’s look, since he was the one who created the Japanese company (Maza) working on the film. He said:
“The power of Sonic fans is amazing. It’s good to be heading in a good direction. Thank you all for loving Sonic.”
“Seeing the unfavorable reactions to Hollywood’s Sonic reminded me of this, but it seems the CG is being done by Maza. Maza was Sega Visual Entertainment, created by me, so I feel I have some responsibility in this.”
