NetherRealm Studios was recently accused of providing terrible working conditions to its employees. According to reports, workers were forced to work overtime (90 hours a week) and complained they could not even sleep 4 hours a night, while others accused the studio of having “predatory and abusive behavior” toward all employees.

A former employee told PC Gamer:
“We raised the harassment … the secret nicknames the developers had for all the female employees, the lack of women who actually had full-time jobs, the choice we felt. We tried to involve others, but they were afraid of being blacklisted and facing retaliation, which made our case harder. ”
After the scandal became public, NetherRealm issued a statement:
“We greatly appreciate and respect all of our employees and prioritize creating a positive work experience. As an equal opportunity employer, we encourage diversity and constantly take steps to reduce our employees’ crunch time.
“We are actively reviewing all allegations, as we take these matters very seriously and are always working to improve our company environment. There are confidential ways for employees to raise any concerns or issues.”
Abusive practices against employees are neither new nor rare. Rockstar was also accused of abusive and toxic behavior during the development of its games, and Epic Games was also recently accused of forcing employees into long hours to deliver Fortnite updates on schedule. These abusive working conditions have led several developers to leave the games industry for software development roles in the corporate world, since there they find much more “humane” working and software development conditions than in the games industry. What do you think about this?
